How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?

I was 13 when I experienced my first broken heart and although I couldn’t imagine ever getting over Chuck, life went on and I survived. If I would have known then that life comes with varying heartaches, of many shapes and sizes, well… maybe it’s better that I didn’t know.

The passing of someone dear to your heart is one of life’s hardest obstacles to overcome. The pain of losing a loved one is so tangible, and perhaps it’s something you never completely get over as you carry the memories with you for life.

Losing a friend, a job, a house; not making a grade or the team are other losses we experience if we live more than a few decades.

Suffering an illness or becoming handicapped or incapacitated in some way is difficult to come to terms with.

Life is full of happy times as well, but dealing with a tragedy or misfortune of some kind is almost a sure bet in the journey of life.

I’ve weathered many storms in my time, none of which I would have chosen. I’ve gained much wisdom and insight because of those things…still none of which I would have chosen.

One of my biggest broken-heart moments was dealing with my son’s first broken heart. The matter became more complicated because the girl was my daughter’s best friend, which meant she was like a daughter to me, almost like a member of our family. Another complication was the timing of it all and her reason for breaking it off.

Complications too, are a part of life.

As I waded through the stream of thoughts and emotions, I remembered first and foremost that this too shall pass.

Life goes on and we will adapt.

And we did.

That occurred about five years ago. The memory will never fade as I watched my son come to terms with that particular loss but time did heal the wound and the young woman is once again a friend of the family.
