My sons are part of Master’s Conservatory of Performing Arts. This weekend they did West Side Story. I loved it! I hated it! The performance itself was good. A lot of the students stepped it up this year. I hated the storyline.
It was fun watching the lively dances, the colorful costumes, the students bronzed skin and some with hair dyed dark.
It was hard watching my son get stabbed to death. It was hard watching my other son shoot someone and get taken away by the police force. Yeah, I know, it was just drama…but an all too real storyline none-the-less. And to hear the excitement in the voices of the Jets and Sharks talking about “the rumble” like they were going to some party, it just served to remind me that this is real-life for some young people.
I will go again and watch tonight, the last performance of West Side Story by Master’s Conservatory and I will cry once again during the closing act as Maria comes to grips with the deaths of her brother and her precious Anton.
